Abstract

Introduction: supra-trochlear foramen located near the lower end of the humerus is less prevalent in human being as compared to other primates like Dogs. Its prevalence rate is different in different ethnic groups. The supratrochlear foramen is important not only clinically but anthropologically. It is prevalent more in Female and more on left sided humerus. It is a rare anatomical variation and should not be misinterpreted as injury (1) Aim/objective: to study prevalence of supra-trochlear foramen in Gujarat population and its morphometric analysis Methodology: 100 dry humeri were studied for morphometric changes in supra-trochlear foramina in anatomy department of SMT.NHL Municipal Medical College of Gujarat Results : out of the right sided bones examined, in a proportion of 33.9% STF were present and for the left sided bones the proportion was 34.1%.more oval shaped foramina were found in the study. Conclusion: STF was significantly present on left sided humerus. Oval shaped foramen was common in our study. Study is evolutionary important because it is also found in dogs and hyenas (2)

INTRODUCTION

In humerus supra-trochlear foramen is significant variation in the lower end of it. In humerus septum is present at the distal end and separates the olecranon fossa and the coronoid fossa, between the two epicondyles, above the capitulum and trochlea. According to the study of Hirsh (1927) the thin plate of bone is always present between coronoid and olecranon process till seven years. After that bony septum occasionally becomes absorbed to form STF (3)

Supra-trochlear foramen is also known as inter-condylar foramen, septal aperture, supratrochlear aperture, epi-trochlear foramen.

The nature of the septum can vary from transparent, opaque, translucent and may be absent.Perforation and transparent septum may results in the formation of septal aperture or inter-condylar foramen.it has racial and evolutionary variationsThe first description of SA was described by Meckel et al (1825)(4)Based on this description other studies were carried out to describe this structure in different animals and vertebrates.

Still studies and knowledge related to supratrochlear foramen, its development and importance is not stressed in standard anatomy and orthopedic books.

In recent times, there has been an increase in intra-medullary fixation of the humerus after an injury or fractures (5)

Studies applied are important for the anthropological, anatomical and clinical significance of supra-trochlear foramen

Aim: this study was conducted for the morphometric analysis of the supra-trochlear foramen and to understand its clinical and surgical importance

METHOD

100 arbitrary dry humeri of unknown origin, gender and age were collected from the anatomy department of SMT.NHL Municipal Medical College, Ahmedabad.

We collect 59 right humeri and 41 left humeri. With the help of a scale and divider, the transverse and vertical dimensions were taken in mm. its distance from medial and lateral epicondyles were measured in centimeters.

The nature of the septum was examined by observing the degree of light that passed through it.

RESULT

incidence of STF in various human races (4):

in previous studies related to incidence of supratrochlear foramina in humerus in various races were compared and the following results were observed:

  • Singhal& Rao,2007: south indian population – 28%
  • Kate & dubey,1970: central Indians population-32%
  • Soubhagya R Nayak,2009: indian population-34.4
  • Hirsh,1927, Arkansas indian population-58%
  • Present study,2024, indian population-34%

CONCLUSION

in this anatomical and morphological study of supra-trochlear foramen shows presence of STF more on left sided humerus and shape was oval in most of the humeri in which foramina were found. Result of our study shows almost same incidence rate and same side that is left sided humeri in which STF is more prevalent
